Australian Meat Pie Recipe
The Australian Meat Pie's journey is a testament to the nation's ability to embrace tradition while adapting to modern tastes.

4 pie dishes

For The Pie Filling
- 1 pound ground beef (minced beef)
- 1 onion finely chopped
- 2 cloves garlic minced
- 2 tablespoons tomatoe paste
- 1 tablespoon worcestershire suace
- 1 teaspoon beef bouillon or stock powder (optional, for extra flavor)
- 1 cup beef broth
- dash salt and pepper
- 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
- 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour (to thicken)
For The Pie Crust
- 2 sheets store-bought shortcrust pastry (or homemade if preferred)
- 2 sheets store-bought puff pastry (or homemade if preferred)
- 1 egg beaten (for egg wash)
Prepare The Filling
In a large skillet, heat the vegetable oil over medium-high heat. Add the chopped onion and cook until softened.
Add the minced garlic and ground beef to the skillet. Cook, breaking up the beef with a spoon, until it's browned and cooked through.
Stir in the tomato paste, Worcestershire sauce, beef bouillon (if using), and flour. Cook for a few minutes to eliminate the raw taste of the flour.
Pour in the beef broth and stir until the mixture thickens. Simmer for about 5 minutes until the filling reaches a consistency that clings to the spoon.
Season the filling with salt and pepper to taste. Remove it from heat and let it cool.

Roll out the puff pastry sheets to cover the pies as the top crust. Trim any excess pastry and crimp the edges to seal the pies. You can use the leftover pastry to decorate the tops.
