Turkey and Cheese Panini

Turkey and Cheese Panini

The origin of the Panini can be traced back to 16th-century Italy, where the concept of pressing sandwiches between hot metal plates first emerged. Initially referred to as "panini" or "little breads," these sandwiches were enjoyed by locals in the charming streets of Milan and beyond. The Italians' ingenuity in creating a perfectly toasted, compact sandwich laid the foundation for the worldwide Panini phenomenon.

Ingredients

  • 8 slices of artisanal bread
  • 1 pound of thinly sliced roasted turkey
  • 8 slices of your favorite cheese such as provolone, Swiss, or cheddar
  • 1/2 cup of unsalted butter softened
  • Dijon mustard or mayonnaise optional
  • Freshly ground black pepper
  • Salt to taste

Instructions

  • . Prepare the Bread:
  • Lay out the slices of bread on a clean surface.
  • If desired, spread a thin layer of Dijon mustard or mayonnaise on one side of each slice.
  • Build the Panini:
  • On half of the bread slices, layer the roasted turkey evenly.
  • Place a slice of cheese over the turkey.
  • Sprinkle a pinch of salt and freshly ground black pepper.
  • Create Sandwiches:
  • Top each turkey and cheese-covered slice with the remaining slices of bread, creating sandwiches.
  • Butter the Bread:
  • Spread a generous amount of softened butter on the outer side of each sandwich. This will give the Panini a crispy, golden exterior.
  • Heat the Panini Press or Skillet:
  • If using a panini press, preheat it. If using a skillet, heat it over medium heat.
  • Grill the Panini:
  • Place the assembled sandwiches onto the preheated panini press or skillet.
  • If using a panini press, close the lid and grill until the bread turns golden and the cheese is melted (approximately 3-4 minutes).
  • If using a skillet, press the sandwiches with a spatula, flipping them halfway through to ensure even cooking. Cook until both sides are golden and the cheese is melted.
  • Serve and Enjoy:
  • Remove the Panini from the press or skillet.
  • Let them rest for a minute before slicing diagonally.
  • Serve hot and enjoy the crispy, gooey goodness of your Turkey and Cheese Panini!
